Temasek's Crypto Caution: Learning from FTX Flop (2026)

Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd., a prominent investment firm based in Singapore, has made a strategic decision to stay away from cryptocurrency investments, even four years after the FTX fiasco. This decision comes as a response to the substantial losses incurred from their investment in the now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange. Nagi Hamiyeh, president of Temasek Global Investments, emphasized the company's focus on blockchain and its infrastructure, rather than direct crypto investments, due to the regulatory uncertainty in the sector. This move reflects a cautious approach to risk management and a preference for more stable and regulated assets.

In an interview with CNBC's Sri Jegarajah, Hamiyeh also highlighted the company's emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications. He believes that AI adoption and the development of a commercial ecosystem around it are more important for long-term investors than pushing for frontier models. Temasek aims to increase its AI exposure from 6% to 15% of its portfolio by 2031, focusing on areas like automation, robotics, and industrial process optimization. This strategy aligns with the company's commitment to long-term investments and its belief in the potential of AI to drive economic growth.

Another key aspect of Temasek's investment strategy is its focus on European luxury, consumer brands, and industrials. Over the past two years, the company has invested approximately 12 billion euros in Europe, making it the second-largest region for Temasek's capital after the U.S. Hamiyeh sees Europe as a leader in luxury, energy transition, and family-owned industrials, where Temasek's long-term patient capital can thrive. The Middle East, despite its long-term transformation potential, remains a region of cautious optimism due to the ongoing conflict.

When it comes to defense contractors, Temasek takes a practical approach. Hamiyeh stated that the firm considers dual-use technologies and avoids biological and chemical weapons. The company's only exposure to the defense sector is through ST Engineering. This balanced approach ensures that Temasek's investments are aligned with its sustainability and ethical investing goals while also considering practical considerations.

In summary, Temasek's decision to stay away from cryptocurrency investments and its focus on AI, European luxury, and practical defense investments reflect a strategic and cautious approach to risk management and long-term growth. The company's emphasis on applications and practical considerations over speculative investments positions it well for a rapidly changing global economy.
